THE government has introduced parking measures that are designed to put common sense back in the driving seat.
New government parking measures in brief:
- 10 minute grace period when parked in a bay
- CCTV ‘spy cars’ banned in the majority of circumstances
- drivers are not fined for parking at out-of-order parking meters
- reinforces that using parking to generate profit is prohibited
- gives parking adjudicators stronger powers to hold councils to account so they can seek to address parking problems
- parking policies support local shops
Highlight of these measures, has to be the introduction of a 10 minute grace period when parked in a bay. Thus preventing that situation, when you’re just a few minutes late back to your car and you end up with a ticket!
But the new parking rules go further, with the use of those CCTV ‘spy cars’ banned in the majority of circumstances, ending the annoyance of those automated fines.
The measures are designed to stop over-zealous parking enforcement, which often forces people to shop in out-of-town centres or online and were approved in the last reading of parking reforms, as part of the Deregulation Bill.
Other measures to protect drivers include new powers for parking adjudicators, so they can hold councils to account to tackle parking problems, such as poor signage at specific locations.
