MoneySuperMarket has found that 14% of UK drivers regularly drive without a seatbelt, while 18% said they have done so at least once.
32% of drivers who have driven without a seatbelt have received a fine for it over the past five years.
MoneySuperMarket warned that drivers who do not wear a seatbelt could be fined up to £500, unless medically exempt or reversing.
It said that drivers who are medically exempt should keep their certificate in their vehicle at all times and should update their insurer.
Alicia Hempsted, car insurance Expert at MoneySuperMarket said: “Seatbelts are one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce injury and save lives on the road, so it’s concerning that a significant number of UK drivers admit to not wearing them when behind the wheel.
“Because insurers use penalty points as a measure of risk, the proposed changes could leave drivers facing more than just a fine.
“Points on a licence may also push up premiums when it’s time to renew.
“There are a limited number of exceptions to this law, such as when reversing, those who are licensed taxi drivers of a private hire vehicle in specific circumstances, certain delivery drivers, and people who are medically exempt.
“Should you be medically exempt, you must always keep your certificate in your vehicle, as well as update your insurer of your exemption.
“For most drivers though, the message is simple: wearing a seatbelt isn’t just about avoiding fines, it’s about saving lives.”
