Audi has launched a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the recently-updated Q5, with 62 miles of electric range, and 299PS.

The Q5 e-hybrid uses a new generation of high voltage batteries, with a 20.7kWh of capacity, 45% more than the previous generation car.

Batteries are mounted in the rear of the car, on two levels due to the increased space that the SUV’s form factor provides.

A smaller, lighter pulse inverter has also been developed for the new model, which reduces electrical consumption.

The electric motor is integrated into the car’s seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, providing 129PS, while the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine produces 251PS.

The PHEV is available across SUV and Sportback models, adding to the range of mild-hybrid petrol and diesel powertrains currently available.

Quattro all-wheel-drive is standard, giving a 0-62 time of 6.2 seconds.

Electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid driving modes are offered, with the hybrid mode retaining a driver-set amount of battery charge, saving electrical power to use later in fully electric mode.

In hybrid mode, the Q5 runs on electric power only for as long as possible.

EV driving is available up to 87mph.

The battery can be charged at up to 11kW (three-phase), with a charge from empty taking 2.5 hours.

Increased regenerative braking features on the model, with the system using navigation and traffic data to optimise its performance.

Three levels of regenerative braking are available, selected by using the steering wheel paddles.

When the brake pedal is pressed, the Q5 will initially utilise regenerative braking, allowing for power to be recovered in 90% of all braking events, with the friction brakes only used when heavy braking is required.

All Audi Q5 PHEV models include 19-inch wheels, sports suspension, LED headlights, and an adjustable rear bench.

Prices will start at £56,740 for the SUV model, with the Sportback model starting at £59,240.

UK orders will open in July 2025, with the UK launch planned for Q3.
