The third-generation of Audi’s bestselling Q5 SUV will arrive in showrooms in 2025 with an entirely mild-hybrid powertrain line-up.

Plug-in hybrids will be added to the Q5 choices later, with a fully-electric Q5 not expected until around 2033 as Audi follows the industry trend of slowing the transition to full-electric in response to customer demand, which is currently trending towards hybrids.

There will be three engine choices at launch, the entry-level being a 204hp petrol unit with 340Nm of torque and Quattro all-wheel-drive. A 3-litre diesel will offer the same power output but 400Nm of torque while the initial range-topper will be the SQ5, its 3-litre V6 petrol engine offering 367hp and 550Nm of torque, again with Quattro.

All three employ Audi’s 48V mild-hybrid technology which can boost torque by up to 230Nm and add 25hp in power for short periods while reducing CO2 emissions, particularly on start-up.

The new Q5 is built on Audi’s latest PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) platform that offers great flexibility in powertrain selection, improved ride and handling and the basis for significant technical upgrades.

A highlight of the new Q5 interior design will be the ‘Digital Stage’ – this uses a single panel that stands away from the front fascia and incorporates an 11.9-inch driver’s instrument display and 14.5-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Among the options list will be a separate 10.9-inch touchscreen for the front-seat passenger.

Commenting on the new model, Audi board chairman Gernot Döllner said that the Q5 has been the brand’s most successful and most important SUV model in the mid-size class for more than 15 years. “The new edition is a further development of its proven characteristics,” Döllner said.

“As the second model in our new generation of highly efficient combustion engines, it marks the next important step in the rejuvenation of our portfolio. I am certain that the new Audi Q5, as a sporty all-rounder with a dynamic SUV design, will continue its success story.”

Audi is yet to release performance and economy data for the new Q5 – this will be announced along with the pricing in October.
