Audi has officially expanded its A5 range to include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) for the first time, offering UK drivers increased flexibility and efficiency alongside a notable 67-mile electric-only range on WLTP figures. Available in both Saloon and Avant body styles, the new A5 e-hybrid quattro models introduce a new “e-hybrid” designation to the brand’s mid-size line-up and are powered by a 2.0 TFSI petrol engine paired with a 142PS electric motor.
The new models use Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) and incorporate a significantly upgraded high-voltage battery. Capacity has increased by around 45% to 25.9 kWh (net 20.7 kWh), allowing for faster AC charging at 11kW and reducing the 0-100% charge time to 2.5 hours.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said: “As part of our model initiative, we are significantly expanding our range of plug-in hybrids in 2025. Our new generation of plug-in hybrid models offers a sporty and comfortable driving experience as well as a harmonious balance between performance and efficiency.”
Geoffrey Bouquot, board member for technical development at Audi AG, added: “The increased electric range of our new plug-in hybrids enables our customers to cover the majority of their daily journeys using only electric power. Our hybrid technology combines the best of both worlds and provides a high degree of flexibility for everyday life. And with the new technology designation ‘e-hybrid,’ this is now also recognisable at first glance.”
The A5 e-hybrid models produce a combined 299PS and 450Nm of torque, delivering 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. The regenerative braking system has also been upgraded and now enables energy recovery of up to 88kW under deceleration. Drivers can adjust the level of regenerative braking using steering wheel paddles, a feature borrowed from Audi’s all-electric models.
In hybrid mode, the vehicle intelligently balances use of the combustion engine and electric motor, using predictive route data to maximise energy efficiency. A new digital slider in the MMI system allows drivers to preselect their desired battery charge level for a given journey, ensuring electric-only driving is possible at the destination.
Audi has also taken a new approach to battery packaging using “cell-to-pack” construction to increase energy density while keeping the battery compact. Each of the 17 prismatic battery cells has a charge capacity of 70 Ah and contributes to the new system’s higher efficiency.
The A5 e-hybrid range starts from £48,950 OTR for the Saloon Technik variant, rising to £60,520 for the Avant Edition 1. All versions feature navigation, Audi’s MMI panoramic display, three-zone climate control, and auxiliary air conditioning. Charging equipment is included as standard, and Audi’s charging service provides access to networks across 29 European countries.
Boot space is rated at 361 litres for the Avant and 331 litres for the Saloon, with rear seats folding to expand capacity to 1,306 and 1,175 litres respectively. Towing capacity is up to 1,900kg braked, with a roof load limit of 90kg.
The A5 e-hybrid launch marks a major step in Audi’s broader electrification push. While the brand prepares to introduce more EV models, it is also investing heavily in plug-in hybrid solutions for customers who require greater flexibility.
