Automotive sector charity Ben is asking for support from across the industry to help the family of 13-year-old Dan Flemen, who will feature in an upcoming episode of DIY SOS as they try to adapt their home to meet his complex care needs.
Dan has been in hospital for more than two and a half years following a brain tumour diagnosis in November 2022. After undergoing emergency surgery at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Dan suffered a stroke and now requires 24-hour care. He is unable to speak, cannot sit unaided, and depends on ventilation support at night.
His mother, Julie, remains with him in hospital accommodation, while his father, Nigel — who works at APL Vehicle Services — and Dan’s two sisters make long journeys from Freckleton, Lancashire to be with them. The family’s home cannot currently accommodate Dan’s care requirements.
To bring him home, the house needs major adaptations, including a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom and facilities for full-time care. Volunteers are being sought for the DIY SOS filming in Freckleton between 16th and 23rd July.
Nigel Flemen, Dan’s dad, said: “Our little family has always been very close, and the thought that Dan may never be able to come home is something we can’t consider or think about, it’s too devastating. That’s why we are asking for help. Dan needs to come home, where he belongs, with all of his family. We feel this would aid his recovery, mental health and quality of life. We are reaching out for help because we believe in the power of community. With your support, we can transform our home into a place where Dan can be surrounded by the love and care he needs and deserves. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to bringing Dan home. Thank you.”
Ben is asking tradespeople and suppliers to get in touch via [email protected]. Donations can be made through GoFundMe.
