Best estate car: for the car that can carry everything - except a heavy tax load

Author: Sam Hardy

Winner: Hyundai i40 Estate

At last Hyundai has produced a large car that can take on and provide a compelling alternative to the establishment – and the new i40 Estate is just that car. It’s a thoroughly class act – smartly styled, enjoyable to drive with a huge boot that has 1,719 litres of space, handy luggage dividers and nets to keep valuables from rolling around. The 134bhp 1.7-litre diesel is exceptionally economical and clean (62.8mpg and 119g/km) while the precise and comfortable driving experience is a real surprise. Add in a quality cabin and a five-year warranty and you’ve got an excellent carry-all that’s a cut above.

Hyundai i40: smart, stylish, low running costs, highly capable on road, low company car tax...you can see why the i40 won

Commended: Ford Mondeo Estate

Vast, slickly styled and sporty from behind the wheel, the Mondeo Estate may be getting on a bit now but it’s still a brilliant business car.

Commended: Volvo V50 DRIVe

Even older than the Mondeo, the V50 shrugs off its age with some compelling figures (74mpg and 99g/km of CO2 and low pence per mile) mixed with a compact and still stylish package.

Commended:  Skoda Octavia Estate

Good value, well equipped and with superb road manners, the Estate takes all the hatchback’s virtues and adds even more space.
