VOLVO has improved the efficiency of models using its Geartronic automatic gearbox. That means lower emissions, better fuel economy and, for businesses and company car drivers, lower tax bills for Volvo automatics. List prices are unchanged.

Volvo S80, V70, S60 and V60 D3 and D4 Geartronic models sneak below the zero road tax 130g/km CO2 barrier, bringing a four percentage point improvement in tax bandings. A company car driver paying 20 per cent tax will save £21 per month on a Volvo V60 D4 SE LUX Geartronic – and employers will also save on class 1A NIC contributions.

Another model using the Geartonic ‘box, the Volvo XC60 D4 FWD Geartronic, sees fuel economy improve from 41.5 mpg to 47.1 mpg from and CO2 emissions fall from 178g/km to 159g/km. That means a drop from the 29 per cent tax band to 25 per cent this financial year and 26 per cent next year.

The improvements apply to all cars built after 11 February.

Selwyn Cooper, Volvo Car UK national corporate operations manager said: “We are committed to the company car driver and we are continuing to strive to improve CO2 at every level. Business car drivers are more likely to opt for automatics and we don’t want them penalised by paying much higher BIK so we are doing everything we can to create vehicles that are kinder to the environment and hence, the pocket.”
