Brighton & Hove City Council has appointed charge point operator Believ to deliver up to 208 new rapid and ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging bays across the city, significantly expanding public charging infrastructure in a £5m privately funded project.

Subject to contract signing, installation is set to begin from late 2025. The new infrastructure will mark a fourfold increase in the number of rapid chargers currently available in the city, with chargers primarily located in public car parks to maximise accessibility for residents, businesses and visitors.

Guy Barlett, chief executive of Believ, said: “Brighton & Hove is a fantastic, thriving city with ambitious plans for net zero transport, and we’re delighted to be a part of these plans.

“The city has a high proportion of residents without access to a driveway or means to privately charge their vehicles. This, combined with the fact it attracts millions of tourists each year, makes robust public charging infrastructure essential to supporting the EV transition.

“As partners, our shared goal is to deliver cleaner air for all, which is why we want to help monitor the impact that switching to electric vehicles can have in reducing air pollution and building a sustainable future. Accessible bays are also important to ensure we leave no one behind in the transition.”

The new chargers will be PAS 1899 compliant, ensuring accessibility for all users. Ultra-rapid chargers will allow drivers to top up from 20% to 80% in around 15 to 20 minutes, while standard rapid chargers will take around 45 to 60 minutes.

Air quality sensors will also be installed as part of the programme, providing data to monitor environmental improvements over time.

Believ has also been confirmed as the official charging partner of the London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally 2025, which takes place on 21st June.

The rally will challenge participants to drive as efficiently as possible from Westminster to Brighton’s Madeira Drive. Believ will take part in the event and host a stand with live demonstrations and prize competitions.
