Business workers pile on the hours

Share

24 November 2011

WE’RE sure any self-employed worker or business owner recognises the long hours culture – it comes with the territory.

But it seems that working excessive amounts of time is gripping businesses in the UK as staff fight for jobs.

Almost half of workers in the UK work well over eight hours every day, over a third put in nine to eleven hours and a tenth work over eleven hours according to the flexible workplace provider Regus.

The company has canvassed the opinions of over 2700 business people across the UK an found that pressure on working hours has become more acute because of the economic downturn and growing concerns over job security, with staff eager to get the job done whatever the personal cost and be seen as productive by their employer.

According to the report, 46% of professionals work seven to nine hours per day, 36% nine to eleven hours and 10% over eleven hours. For many, the working day is not over when they leave the office. Over two-fifths of workers (43%) take work home to finish in the evening at least three times a week.
