Electric vehicle (EV) platform Monta recently launched its EV ranking system, designed to help customers rank the real-world performance of EV chargers.

Business Motoring spoke with Casper Rasmussen, CEO and co-founder of Monta, about the effects of the ranking system and the opportunities for further progression within this sector.

Why was there a gap in the market for an EV ranking system?

There’s currently no standardised ranking system from regulators, and it is unlikely we’ll see one any time soon.

That leaves charge point operators (CPOs) needing to make critical infrastructure decisions without consistent benchmarks, despite the fact that the quality of their estate has a direct impact on the profitability and reliability of their business.

At Monta, we have integrated more than 700 charge point models and collected data from millions of charging sessions. This gives us a uniquely broad and deep perspective on the performance of charging hardware in real-world conditions. It made perfect sense for us to step in and provide the transparency the market needs.

Have you seen improvements since creating this platform?

Absolutely. A key example is a 50% reduction in failed charge sessions after we shared our performance data with a major DC charger manufacturer.

That change now results in thousands of successful charging sessions every week – something that directly improves the user experience and boosts trust in the CPO’s brand and infrastructure.

We are also seeing slow but steady movement toward adopting OCPP 2.0.1, which provides a much more comprehensive and detailed protocol compared to version 1.6.

That said, uptake is still too low – we need to see broader industry commitment to newer standards.

You have said that trust in the charging experience must become absolute – what are the biggest trust gaps you are seeing today?

One major issue is transaction timeouts. These occur when a charging session fails to initiate or confirm, often due to inconsistent data exchange between OEMs, hardware, and software. A more standardised approach – alongside increased data sharing – could make a significant impact here.

Another gap is network uptime. Too often, drivers are the first to report when something is not working. CPOs need better tools and data to monitor their network in real time and respond proactively.

Roaming reliability is another challenge. While OCPI integrations are improving interoperability, there are still too many points of failure between different platforms and apps.

Lastly, payment issues remain a common source of frustration, especially when errors or unclear interfaces lead to failed or 0kWh sessions. These may seem minor individually but add up to a significant erosion of trust.

How does Monta see its role in accelerating EV adoption?

We provide a comprehensive platform that integrates many of these core capabilities – uptime monitoring, remote diagnostics, automated alerts, and more – giving CPOs a robust, proactive toolkit rather than forcing them to stitch together dozens of disconnected systems.

Just as importantly, we believe in transparency. By making key performance data public, we help the entire industry make smarter decisions. Better data leads to better infrastructure, which leads to a better charging experience.

That is how we build the driver confidence needed to truly scale EV adoption.

Are there any progression points from here that Monta wants to pursue?

We are continuing to refine our ranking algorithms and performance benchmarks, going even deeper into our data to generate more actionable insights for manufacturers, CPOs, and users alike.

We are also investing in technologies like Plug & Charge, where we are seeing dramatically higher charge success rates.

This is a crucial step toward delivering the seamless, reliable experience drivers expect – and accelerating the broader shift to clean mobility.
