FleetCheck has found that companies are increasingly using fleet management software to manage other assets, beyond just fleet-related items.
Companies are giving assets QR codes or other identifiers, allowing location, compliance status and condition to be registered on fleet management software.
Whole-life costs of any asset are able to be tracked.
FleetCheck customers discussed the subject in-depth at its recent Customer Conference, held at Resorts World Birmingham during the Commercial Vehicle (CV) Show.
Peter Golding (pictured), CEO at FleetCheck, said: “Most fleet managers have long realised that assets directly linked to cars and vans can be managed using their fleet software, from dashcams to tow hooks.
“However, more and more, we are seeing a wide range of non-fleet items being monitored in the same way.
“This might include obvious examples such as tools and parts but we even have a housing association that lists items such as microwave ovens and furniture.
“This allows everything from expensive, major items to be tracked through to easily lost or stolen smaller pieces of kit.
“For example, expensive protective clothing such as masks and gloves often go missing – and our technology gives fleet managers visibility over who is regularly asking for replacements.
“Whatever the item, the principles are the same, and the software can create genuine insight into real world costs and help identify where savings can be made.
“There was much appreciation from delegates of the value that fleet software delivers but also recognition that many users have more opportunities to leverage the system in ways beyond vehicle and driver compliance, and the possibility of extended asset management very much caught the imagination of the room.”
