Half of British motorists say that the rising cost of motoring is their biggest car-related concern for 2014

WITH the new year approaching, people are looking forward to Christmas and some well-deserved time off.

But many are still concerned about the spiralling cost of motoring, and according to a poll by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, nearly half cited it as their main worry for 2014.

Fuel prices, taxation and the depreciation costs take their toll on motorists’ pockets

The survey revealed that 48.5 per cent of British motorists think that the cost of running their vehicle is their biggest car-related concern for 2014 – outstripping road safety, car crime and the cost of parking.

Donna Kelly, marketing and website editor at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, said: “In the current economic climate, it is no surprise that the cost of motoring figures so highly in motorists’ lists of concerns.

“Fuel prices, taxation and the depreciation costs take their toll on motorists’ pockets. This is why we think car leasing is becoming more and more of a viable option for motorists, as it takes many of the risks associated with owning a vehicle away from the motorist themselves.”

What’s more, with the winter months in full swing, vehicle maintenance is more important than ever. However, with the risk of big bills and reduced cash flow, many drivers will put off essential repairs until after Christmas.

While 51 per cent of drivers in England cited costs as their main concern, a whopping 57 per cent of Scots put it as their number one worry. In Wales, however, 50 per cent of people were concerned about other motorists’ driving, compared to 18 per cent in England.

The survey also revealed that more men worried about car crime than women, and more women were concerned about road conditions than men.

However, these percentages were small compared to the number of motorists bothered by the cost of running a car.

Roughly as many people were worried about the cost of motoring as those concerned by poor driving, road conditions, vehicle crime and the cost of parking put together.

Nationwide was a winner in the Small Fleet Leasing Awards this year, topping the Best Small Fleet Personal Lease Award
