SEAT spin-off brand Cupra has unveiled its new Terramar mid-sized SUV, which is expected to be the final bespoke model from the brand to offer non-electric powertrain options.
The Terramar will target such rivals as the BMW X1, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan. Its name pays tribute to the race circuit on the northeast Spanish coast where the Cupra brand was first launched.
The Terramar will be offered with five powertrain options. Entry-level will be a mild hybrid 1.5-litre 150hp petrol engine mated to a seven-speed DSG auto transmission while there will be two 2-litre petrol engines – the 204hp variant will again be combined with the DSG transmission and all-wheel drive, as will the 265hp version in the Terramar VZ – the latter stands for the Spanish word Veloz which means quick or fast.

A pair of plug-in hybrid variants will complete the range – combining the 1.5 petrol engine with an electric motor to produce either 204 or 272hp, they will make use of a 19.7kWh battery pack giving a WLTP-certified all-electric range of more than 70 miles.
Both plug-in Terramars will be able to be fast-charged at up to 50kW DC, or at home using an 11kW wallbox.
The Terramar is built on the same platform as several other Volkswagen group models but Cupra says it will be tuned for a more sporty performance matching the image of the brand – this will include a 10mm lower ride height than its sister vehicles.
The vehicle’s interior design also reflects its sporty pretensions, with bucket seats and instrumentation placed to effectively surround the driver. A new and improved digital instrument panel sits alongside the 12.9-inch infotainment screen while a windscreen head-up display is also part of the package.
Cupra adds, however, that the Terramar is a practical SUV with such features as a sliding rear seat bench increasing boot space up to a maximum of 602 litres.
The car was unveiled at the America’s Cup yacht race in Barcelona, Spain and Cupra intends to launch with a limited edition called the Terramar America’s Cup and running to 1300 vehicles. A UK sales launch and pricing is yet to be confirmed.
