The mildly altered Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet – is this really “the most extensive model revision ever undertaken by Mercedes-Benz”?

MERCEDES has announced revised pricing and specs for its E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet which have just received a mid-life update.

Although the company is describing the changes as “part of the most extensive model revision ever undertaken by Mercedes-Benz” the overall form of the two cars is unchanged.

They retain their unusual rear wheel arch treatment that recalls that of the 1950s “Ponton” model, a feature that was dropped from the E-Class saloon as part of its own recent facelift, although there are revised lights and bumpers.

Under the skin, though, the changes are more extensive.

Mercedes is claiming efficiency improvements of up to 21 per cent compared with the previous models, and now only one petrol engined version, badged E 200, is offered, compared with three diesels – the four-cylinder E 220 CDI and 250 CDI, and the six-cylinder E 350 CDI.

CO2 emissions winner, at 123g/km, is the manual E 220 CDI Coupe, which, despite achieving a combined fuel consumption of 60.1mpg, still manages to get to 62mph from rest in 8.5 seconds, and crack a top speed of 146mph.

There are two equipment levels – SE, which is applied only to the E 220 CDI – and AMG Sport, available with all engine variants.

All cars get COMAND Online with Media Interface, a DAB digital radio, speed-sensitive electric power steering, partial LED headlights, Active Park Assist, and two safety systems – Attention Assist and Collision Prevention Assist.

The SE gets seventeen-inch alloys and leather upholstery with heated front seats. The AMG Sport has eighteen-inch alloys, upgraded front brakes, new AMG body mods, leather upholstery with multi-contour heated front seats and an AMG steering wheel in nappa leather.

Prices of the revised models start at £35,095 for the Coupe and £38,465 for the Cabriolet. And don’t forget that emissions winner – it means a company car tax rate of 19 percent.
