Mercedes-Benz has published pictures of the first all-electric version of its best-selling GLC SUV undergoing cold weather testing.

The new car will slot into the GLC range alongside the existing combustion-engined versions, and effectively replace the existing EQC electric model as Mercedes brings its traditional and electric ranges closer together in the hope of stimulating EV sales as a result.

Camouflaged versions of the new GLC EV have been testing inside the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, ahead of the car being the major Mercedes model unveiled at the Munich Auto Show in September.

The GLC sits on a new electric car platform that will later underpin other forthcoming models from Mercedes-Benz. A full range will be available including a rear-wheel-drive single motor version with 272hp and a range-topping dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant with 490hp.

The all-wheel-drive versions incorporate a front-drive unit that can engaged or disengaged using a Disconnect Unit, while other technical innovations include a new compact brake system which both merge all the separate components into one module and provide superior regeneration returning energy to the battery.

While releasing few further technical details at this point, Mercedes-Benz states that the new GLC incorporates all the latest technology available and sets new benchmarks for performance, range, efficiency and charging speed.

The cold-weather environment is providing the harshest conditions in which to test the battery quality – several sizes will be available for the GLC including a top model that will support rapid charging rates up to 320kW.

The brand promises that the electric version of the car will boast all the practicality and versatility that has made the combustion-engined GLCs among the brand’s best sellers since they launched in 2015.

When the electric GLC goes on sale in 2026 it will directly rival the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW iX3 and Porsche Macan.
