The Fiat 500X interior is bright, airy and surprisingly roomy

Business Car Manager Verdict:

First time out, Fiat seems to have hit the ground running with the 500X which morphs the charm and style of the 500 hatchback into the fashionable new compact crossover format.

It’s a fresh, upscale take on the 500 format, that’s easier on the eye than some other Fiat offerings (such as the 500L…). It’s also has been skillfully conceived through many variations to appeal to many market needs.

Quality, comfort, space utility are good and the 500X has a classy look, especially inside, that sets it apart.

The 500X tested here, the front-drive 1.6 diesel Lounge should be a good all-rounder for the business user, with the best C02 and mpg numbers meaning low taxes and running costs.

It’s a refined and agreeable car to drive too, with good body control, composed ride and tidy handling. Competent in all key areas, this 1.6 500X hits the mark, but bear in mind there are several editions (and rivals) that will be cheaper.

In terms of product features and pricing, Fiat says the 500X sits midway between mainstream junior SUVs and premium ones.

We’ll wait to see the car on the road in the UK to see exactly how that stacks up. But here and now, we can say the Fiat 500X – particularly this business-friendly 1.6 diesel – stands as an appealing new entrant into an increasing crowded marketplace.
