SKODA has given the Superb hatchback and estate a comprehensive mid-life update. The changes will boost the credentials of Skoda’s biggest model as a half-price E-Class and 5-Series alternative for company car drivers who need a lot of space.

The revised models will be seen in the metal for the first time later this month at the Shanghai Motor Show. The most obvious change is a facelift but there are also improvements in economy and equipment levels.

At the front, the Superb is brought into line with the new Skoda look already seen on the Rapid and the new Octavia, with changes to grille, badge, headlamps, bumpers and bonnet. The rear light units are also tweaked but keep Skoda’s C-shaped ‘signature’ form.

The engine line-up is familiar but there are still fuel savings of up to 19 per cent on some models thanks to measures such as the adoption of stop-start as standard on diesels and the 1.4 TSI petrol.

Business car buyers with an eye on their company car tax should look at the eco-oriented 1.6-litre diesel GreenLine model is retained and now returns 67.3mpg and 109g/km. The 140PS 2.0 TDI diesel version of the 4×4 variant now gets a manual gearbox, while the 170PS version gets a six-speed self-shifting dual-clutch DSG gearbox.

Inside, there are new fabrics, patterns and colours, and a choice of four modern audio and navigation systems, with the top Columbus version featuring a 6.5-inch colour touch screen and integrated 30GB hard drive.
