COMPANY car drivers looking for the cleanest, most efficient company cars, should look east – to Germany.

Fleet Alliance – a Glasgow based fleet solutions provider – named seven German cars in the top ten lowest emissions cars funded by the company in the last year.

Top of the list was the popular Volkswagen Golf – with average CO2 emissions across all of the model variants supplied through Fleet Alliance of just 113g/km. Models like the super-frugal BlueMotion diesel helped bring this figure down, as did fuel-sipping features such as stop-start technology and low rolling-resistance tyres.

The Audi A3, which shares many features with the Golf, came a close second, managing an impressive average 114g/km.

Third place went to Ford’s high-selling Focus.

Perhaps even more impressive was the inclusion of the BMW 5 Series, which beat a number of smaller cars to clinch eighth place. Helped by the economical 520d EfficientDynamics, the 5 Series range managed average emissions of just 127g/km.

The rest of the top ten was comprised of the VW Passat, Audi A4, Vauxhall Insignia, Skoda Octavia and Mercedes C-Class. The Ford Mondeo slotted into tenth place.
