97% of HGV fleets agreed that cameras paired with telematics have been effective in reducing safety incidents. A third of fleets (33%) said they perform roller brake testing after every major trip, while 31% conducted monthly tests.
Meanwhile, 69% of fleets see real-time driver alerts and assistance, such as collision warnings and fatigue monitoring, as the most promising application of artificial intelligence (AI) for improving fleet safety.
82% of HGV fleets have adopted electronic brake performance monitoring systems (EBPMS) to enhance brake safety and meet regulatory standards.
Nearly all HGV fleets (96%) have formal processes to support driver mental wellbeing after incidents, compared to 67% of van fleets. 71% of HGV operators reported high or moderate levels of stress, compared to 54% of van operators.
Beverley Wise, Webfleet Regional Director UKI, Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, and Klaus Burgstaller, Indirect Business Sales Director, said: “Fleet safety has never been more critical, as operators embrace innovative technologies to tackle complex challenges and create safer roads for all. “From advanced telematics to AI-driven insights, technology is driving a revolution in how fleets approach safety, regulatory compliance and driver wellbeing. In the UK, these advancements come against the backdrop of a heightened focus on accountability and operational efficiency. “HGV operators grapple with stringent regulations, while van fleets balance cost constraints with a commitment to safer roads. Across both, the stakes are high—whether it is reducing incident rates, managing insurance premiums or supporting drivers through the emotional toll of life behind the wheel.”
