The use of telematics data in UK vehicle fleets is on track for strong growth, according to new findings from the Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer.
19% of UK businesses operating vehicle fleets are already using telematics data, with a further 44% saying they are considering adopting it within the next three years.
Car fleets showed slightly greater enthusiasm, with 19% already using telematics and 48% considering it, compared with 18% adoption and 35% consideration among van fleets.
John Peters, head of Arval Mobility Observatory in the UK, said: “What we are seeing here is a relatively high level of current usage for telematics at slightly less than one in five car and van fleets but a very high level of interest for the future.
“We believe there are probably a number of trends powering this, from wanting to use the technology to help control costs and maximise operational efficiency, through to a growing awareness of the potential of emerging connected vehicle services.”
Compared to last year, the proportion of fleets already using telematics has risen by 3% for both cars and vans – a sign that momentum is building.
Peters added: “This potentially confirms that the enthusiasm for telematics being seen in our research is probably resulting in some increased adoption, even if not to the dramatic extent that the data suggests.”
UK fleets were also slightly ahead of the curve when compared with international peers.
The Arval research showed UK usage outpacing European (14%) and global (15%) adoption levels, with similar levels of interest for future adoption.
Peters said: “The UK does tend to make more use of fleet technology than most other countries.
“But the differences being seen for telematics are not too dramatic.
“They suggest that telematics is having an impact for fleets just about everywhere.”
