With a reliable Nova Scotia car loan, you have purchased a fleet of vehicles that you will use for your business dealings. Nice step!

Your business is now moving in the right direction, and your fleet is aiding the delivery of goods to your ever-growing clientele base wherever they are. You have noted significant growth in your revenues, and you are expecting more in the next few months. Good luck with that!

But suddenly…

Six months down the line, you start noticing that the fuel spend has increased significantly. You are now spending twice as much as you used to when you first bought the fleet.

Whether you went for good business for sale or you started one from scratch, fuel spend is something that you cannot take for granted. Below are some strategies you can use to reduce this cost.

  • Vehicle preventive maintenance is paramount

Some business owners will use their vehicles for up to one year without caring about preventive maintenance, and this is where they go wrong.

Ensuring that you maintain regular preventive maintenance intervals will go a long mile in lowering your fuel spend by a small but significant margin.

An essential component of preventive maintenance is an oil change. It is imperative to ensure that your fleet implements the ideal kind of motor oil, which will be important in keeping the engine in good condition. According to auto experts, doing this can also fuel economy by a whopping 40%!

If you are involved in other activities that directly affect your business and you might not have time to supervise regular maintenance of your vehicles, hiring a fleet manager is a prudent decision.

  • Never ignore tyre and wheel maintenance

What is the last time you balanced the tyre pressure of your fleet? Well, if you cannot remember, then you have an answer as to why you are spending thousands of bucks on fuel every month.

Another way of reducing fuel spend is by ensuring that wheels are correctly aligned. According to experts, this can improve fuel efficiency by 10%.

  • Avoid unnecessary weight

The weight of a vehicle is another factor that directly affects its consumption. Therefore, you need to check whether your vehicles have any added weight periodically.

The reason why added weight leads to increased consumption is simple. The heavier the vehicle gets, the more energy it needs to move. Make sure that all your vehicles are mean and lean, and sooner or later, you will see how much money you will save on fuel.

  • Route tracking

Knowing what routes your drivers should take can also help reduce your fuel spend. By having a functional GPS, you will be able to determine the shortest routes to take, which will cut down on unnecessary miles that consume more fuel.

Also, tracking your fleet will go a long way in making sure that you instill discipline in your drivers; since they will not be tempted to use vehicles for personal use.

Fuel can be one of the most expensive ventures in your business, if you don’t take the necessary steps to reduce it. Apart from the tips mentioned above, take your drivers for additional training on how to drive and save fuel.

Additionally, you can go green on your fleet, and opt or alt-fuels. When you do this, there is no reason why you should close business or sell your vehicles because they are chewing your profits from inside out!
