Companies are significantly more likely to implement sustainable initiatives when they offer measurable financial or operational benefits in the short term, according to Geotab and its affiliates in its fourth annual Sustainability and Impact Report, released today.

The report, titled Pragmatic Solutions for a Changing World, reflects a marked shift in the business approach to sustainability, driven by present-day economic realities. “Sustainability can drive both cost savings and efficiency,” said Neil Cawse, founder and CEO of Geotab. “When these initiatives are integrated into everyday business operations, they naturally reduce environmental impact while boosting the bottom line. It’s a clear win-win, and hard to oppose once you see the value.”

The Confederation of British Industry recently reported that the UK’s net zero economy is growing three times faster than the wider economy, but Geotab argues this growth must be felt operationally. The company increased deployment of its sustainability solutions by 39% in the last year. Meanwhile, the number of electric vehicles connected to its platform grew by 63%, collectively covering over 700 million miles.

The report outlines how Geotab’s connected vehicle technology is helping businesses deliver short-term financial improvements while advancing their environmental goals. United Utilities used Geotab’s EV Suitability Assessment to determine which vehicles to transition from ICE to EVs. As a result, fuel economy increased by 35% and emissions per vehicle dropped by 26%.

In the US, California Freight reduced annual fuel costs by around £40,000 after implementing idling reports, reinvesting the savings into developing new APIs for accident reporting and notifications. In Germany, DB Regio, which operates over 10,000 buses, achieved a CO2 reduction of 1,400 tons and saved several hundred thousand litres of diesel annually by using Geotab’s telematics.

“At Geotab, we’re focused on empowering customers with data-driven solutions that translate into real-world efficiency gains,” added Cawse. “Whether it’s optimising routes, minimising fuel consumption, or strategically transitioning to electric vehicles, these actions directly reduce operational expenses while supporting environmental goals.”

Marking its 25th anniversary this year, Geotab continues to innovate with tools such as its Sustainability Center, TÜV Rheinland-certified Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report, EV Charge Monitoring and EV Suitability Assessment – each designed to help businesses reach their sustainability goals through practical, cost-effective steps.
