Golf Alltrack Review
What is it?
A rugged addition to the Golf Estate lineup. This is the new Golf Alltrack, a four-wheel drive and jacked up estate with more off-roading ability than any other Golf can lay claim to.
It’s the last of a trio of new Golf Estate variants, which should help VW narrow the gap on the 12 to one ratio the hatchback currently outsells the estate by.
And the Alltrack gets off to a good start, with a range of powerful but efficient diesel engines on offer and with prices starting from £26,790. There’s plenty of kit too, while clever offroad tech and a towing potential of 2,000kg will appeal to those who will take advantage of its rugged ability.
What’s hot?
- The Alltrack makes a case for itself as being the most handsome Golf in the range. The ride has been jacked up by 20mm, a set of chunky bumpers have been added, while the beefed up cladding on the arches certainly give it some presence.
- Only diesel engines are offered to UK buyers. The options include a 109bhp 1.6-litre diesel and a higher powered 2.0-litre unit in two states of tune; 148bhp and 181bhp. The latter is only available with a six-speed DSG gearbox.
- Unsurprisingly, the Alltrack drives like any other Golf estate. We tested the 181bhp 2.0-litre version, which delivers a fair turn of pace, with 0-62mph complete in only 7.8 seconds.
- But because it is a Golf it’s also very refined at speed. The added 20mm gives a more cushioned feel to ride over more rutted surfaces, which is great for inner city driving. The steering is light but accurate and the automatic gearbox is precise and smooth with changes.
- Its looks aren’t just for show either, as the Alltrack also has some real offroad ability. A tailor-made ‘Offroad’ setting in the driver profile options locks the four-wheel drive system, activates hill descent control and modifies throttle response for smoother travel.
- The Alltrack is based on GT spec models, so comes generous equipped with sat nav, two zone climate control, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloys as well as bi-xenon headlamps.
