The new Ford Capri electric SUV has earned a top five-star crash-test rating from safety body Euro NCAP, but the brand’s van-based MPV, the Tourneo, could only manage three stars.
The Ford Tourneo Courier is based on the Transit Courier van, which received a Platinum rating from Euro NCAP in 2024, thanks to its high level of installed active safety technologies, so the testers described the Tourneo’s results as surprisingly mediocre for a Ford vehicle.
Euro NCAP makes a broader assessment of passenger cars compared to vans and in the full-width rigid barrier frontal impact, protection of the head was rated as poor for a small female sitting in the rear seat. “The test is a tough one for the rear restraint system, which includes the belts, pre-tensioners and load-limiters,” Euro NCAP stated, adding that it was understood that this issue will be rectified, and it will then reassess the updated passenger car version in 2025.

The Capri is based on the Ford Explorer, which was tested in September 2024 so crash-testers took the Explorer’s rating and conducted an additional test on the Capri before giving it five-star status.
The latest results also saw the Cupra Tavascan electric SUV and MG HS SUV clock up five-star ratings. Testers concluded that the Tavascan offered good protection to all occupants including children, and highlighted its active bonnet to protect pedestrians, driver fatigue detection, lane support system and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (iACC), which can adapt the vehicle’s speed to the prevailing limits and road conditions.
Euro NCAP last tested MG’s largest vehicle, the HS, in 2019 and gave it a five-star rating.?The test protocols have been upgraded twice since then, and MG has kept abreast of developments, with new technologies to ensure a 2024 five-star result which according to the test body demonstrates the continuing influence of Euro NCAP on vehicle safety, and the willingness of manufacturers such as MG to respond, pushing their cars to ever-higher levels of performance.?
“It may seem that Euro NCAP is setting a tough task for manufacturers, yet we work closely together with industry, encouraging changes in car design that ultimately save lives,” said Dr Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP.?
He added; “As Euro NCAP upgrades its protocols to be more stringent, with new guidelines for safety technologies and in relation to vulnerable users, we are ensuring that as a consumer, you have the best safety equipment available as standard on your new car to make your journey as safe as it can possibly be.”
