Global fleet and leasing specialist Holman has won a three-year contract to manage the fleet of National Highways.

Holman will now be overseeing what is regarded as one of the highest profile fleets in the UK, comprising close to 750 vehicles mostly wearing the yellow and black livery familiar to thousands of motorway users.

The majority of the National Highways fleet are 4x4s and SUVs, the roster including the Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5, Maxus T90 and eDeliver 9, as well as a variety of other vehicles from BMW, Volvo, Toyota, Kia and Ford, and  nearly 50 incident screen trailers.

The fleet works out of 85 depots around the UK, overseeing 4,300 miles of motorways and major A-roads, as well as ensuring 10,000 miles of carriageways, 150,000 signs, 20,000 bridges, and 100,000 streetlights are all operational. Alongside this formidable workload, National Highways is targeting all its  traffic officer vehicles being ultra-low emission by 2025, and zero emission by 2030.

Holman won the contract following a competitive tender via the YPO public sector fleet framework, and the company put its success down partly to its expertise in supporting high-use operational vehicles – the National Highways Traffic Officer service works around the clock, 24/7, 365 days a year, its vehicles required to have very high levels of uptime.

Meeting this requirement will see Holman managing maintenance, breakdown, tyres and accidents, as well as providing rental services and fleet administration, including fuel cards and fines.

Commenting on the new contract Holman business development manager Steven Shepherd said that it demonstrates the level of support the company can bring.

“Our team have the knowledge and tools to keep high use operational vehicles on the road, through the identification of trends that are affecting downtime, rectification of those issues through proactive maintenance and repair, and fast-moving action when breakdowns occur, or drivers need a replacement vehicle,” he said.

As part of the contract National Highways will be able to access Holman’s Insights platform, which provides customers with transparent access to all data on such aspects as wear, tear and repair, while officers will be able to use the new Holman Driver App to manage all their SMR bookings and condition reporting.

Maintenance and repairs of all vehicles will be handled by a network of suppliers and repairers which now totals more than 2,000 outlets, with the contract run from Holman’s Chippenham HQ.
