Just as I finished my last report on my Honda CR-V, I was about to hit the auto route on a mega 2,150 mile drive to the French Alps, for our family holiday.

As expected, the Honda CR-V performed admirably – literally eating up the miles and turning in some impressive fuel figures.

This washed away road in the Alps proved to be no problem for the Honda

Considering the Honda CR-V was fully loaded with four people and all our holiday gear, I thought an average of 49mpg over 560 motorway miles was excellent.

Space is important to keep Mrs Ratcliffe and the kids happy, so I was pleased there was enough room for all our luggage in the practical boot.

I could even pull the cover over for safety and security!

There were no complaints from my kids in the back either, which was satisfying on this long trip. In fact – they had more than enough legroom.

When we got to the Alps, the Honda CR-V’s 1.6-litre diesel coped well with the steep mountain passes, with most of them done in 3rd and 4th gears.

The Honda felt sure-footed and there were no scared squeals from my kids in the back!

Honda CR-V 1.6D: Facts, Figures, Likes and Dislikes

  • P11D – £25,060
  • Company car tax – £80 per month for a basic taxpayer
  • Official mpg -62.8mpg
  • Our average mpg -60mpg at 9,700 miles
  • Our best mpg – 61mpg on a 250 mile trip
  • We like – SUV styling, build quality, excellent economy
  • We don’t like  – Noisy diesel engine on start up and acceleration, over-sensitive parking sensors, confusing tyre pressure warning system

On one memorable occasion at 2,200 meters, torrential rains had washed away the road.  It was at this point, that I was grateful of the CR-V’s taller stance and extra ground clearance, as the Honda waded through what was basically a stream.

Then just weeks later, the Honda CR-V and I were on another road trip.  This time to Glasgow for a golf event, visiting clients in Doncaster, Harrogate, Leeds, Manchester and Stoke.

The Honda again proved to be a smooth refined motorway performer, averaging 300 miles a day and I didn’t feel overly driven out.

The spacious boot was perfect for transporting two sets of golf clubs and electric trolleys too.
