ARE you sick of paying company car tax for a car you barely use?

The little known fact is that if you use your bike for work you can charge 20p per mile, tax-free

Well switch to pedal power and the government will pay you, instead of you paying them.

Since the London 2012 Olympics, cycle use in the UK has rocketed, with everyone from highly-skilled workers to CEOs taking to two wheels to get fit and save some cash.

The little known fact, however, is that if you use your bike for work purposes, you can actually charge 20p per mile, tax-free.

And two pedal power is likely to increase with the Tour de France returning to the UK.

To help plan the event, Tour de France (TdF) sponsor, Skoda, has provided the Regional TdF Police Planning Team in West Yorkshire with a fully-liveried Skoda Octavia vRS estate.

The 2014 Tour de France cycling competition actually starts in Leeds next year, with the opening stages taking in some of the most picturesque and iconic areas of ‘God’s own County’.

The high-performance Skoda Octavia vRS estate mixes lightning-fast acceleration with affordable running costs.

If you opt for the diesel with a manual gearbox you’ll benefit from 61mpg fuel economy and 119g/km CO2 emissions. Ok, so it’s not as cheap as cycling, but if you’re a lower rate tax-payer who values their bootspace, you’ll pay just £72 a month in company car tax  – not bad for a fast estate that does 0-60mph in just 7.9 seconds.

Inspector Terry Murgatroyd, Operations Support Services, West Yorkshire Police commented: “We are very grateful to be working in partnership with Skoda and for its support of British policing in the run-up to this world-class event.”
