The new i20’s interior is roomy, but there’s little of the ‘surprise and delight’ of the current Fiesta

Business Car Manager Verdict:

Hyundai has put a lot of effort into this new generation i20, taking the existing formula and rebooting it with extra space, sleeker looks and a fine chassis.

It’s a car to appeal to a broad European audience and as an overall package, it works. The level of cabin space and the car’s accomplished ride and handling are two particular stand outs. Kit levels are generous for the price and comfort is good. Would that the cabin was as smart or alluring as some key rivals, however.

For UK company car drivers, the engine’s 127 g/km for CO2 might be an issue. If it is, then you can get a better BIK rate (and 70.6 mpg combined) with the base 1.1 CRDi diesel. The charms of this small capacity three cylinder diesel must be an acquired taste, however. So for driver appeal, we’d recommend upgrading to the 1.2 petrol, or even better, this 1.4 which strikes a good overall balance.

For now, this 1.4 petrol may well be the pick of the new i20 family. Coming in 2015, however, is a new 1.0-litre petrol turbo from Hyundai that will mark the start of a new engine generation family.  Chances are it’ll make this newly minted and effective i20 even more competitive against the big players in the sector.
