InstaVolt is set to operate more than 1,000 EV charging sites nationwide after agreeing to acquire 228 charging locations from the GeniePoint network.

The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals and expected to complete during the next quarter, will add more than 260 chargers to InstaVolt’s network.

It will take the company to more than 4,250 chargers across around 1,200 locations, reinforcing its position as the UK’s largest ultra-rapid public charging network.

The acquired estate includes charging locations at local authority car parks, motorway services, retail and hospitality destinations across the UK.

It also includes a framework agreement with a number of national brands and more than 100 charging sites located within local authority car parks.

InstaVolt said it will rebrand and upgrade all acquired locations over the next 12 months.

The investment programme will include enhanced grid connections, battery energy storage systems, improved signage and the installation of BYD ultra-rapid charging technology.

The company expects to increase the number of chargers across the acquired sites from more than 260 to over 400, while introducing its contactless payment system, no-subscription model and network reliability, which it said delivers more than 99% uptime.

During the transition period, existing GeniePoint chargers will continue to be operated and maintained by GeniePoint until they are replaced. Customers will continue to receive 24/7 support throughout the migration process.

The acquisition also expands InstaVolt’s portfolio of charging partners, which includes brands such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Costa Coffee, British Land and LondonMetric.

“By surpassing 1,200 locations, we become the first charge point operator in the UK to operate more than 1,000 sites nationwide. It is a significant achievement that reflects the trust placed in us by drivers, landlords and major national brands.

“The UK EV market is moving quickly, with more than two million electric cars now on UK roads and demand continuing to grow.

“Drivers need infrastructure that keeps pace, and that means more chargers in the right places, working reliably, every time.

“Acquiring these sites allows us to bring InstaVolt’s reliability and simplicity to even more locations. It is a clear statement of our commitment to building the public charging network the country needs as it makes the switch to electric.”

The acquisition follows a series of major developments for InstaVolt, including the opening of its ultra-rapid charging Superhub in Winchester and the deployment of a motorway battery storage installation connected directly to ultra-rapid EV charging at Corley Services on the M6.
