BMW has confirmed that its next era ‘Neue Klasse’ electric model range will begin with the unveiling of the iX3 SUV at the Munich Motor Show in September, ahead of going on sale in 2026.
The second-generation version of the mid-sized SUV will effectively only be related to its predecessor, launched in 2021, in size. The latest iX3 is built on an entirely new bespoke electric platform and promises a dramatic new look both on the exterior and interior, as seen on the ‘Vision Neue Klasse X’ concept pictured above, which was revealed in 2024.
While technical details of the iX3 and its electric architecture are still to be released it is known that the new platform, which will underpin all forthcoming Neue Klasse models including the next-generation 3 Series, will be significantly more efficient and lighter.
It will use a battery pack able to accommodate 20% more energy and include 800V electric capacity, which will have the ability when rapid charging to add around 186 miles of extra range in only 10 minutes.
Prime rivals for the iX3 will be the Audi Q6 e-tron and the new GLC that will shortly be introduced by Mercedes-Benz. Business Motoring also understands that the current X3 SUV, which is BMW’s best-selling model, will continue to be sold alongside the new EV.
Speaking at BMW’s annual financial presentation, management board chairman Oliver Zipse said that the launch of the iX3 will kick off an unprecedented ramp-up of new models, with the brand launching more than 40 new and updated vehicles across all segments and drivetrains by 2027.
“What these new models have in common is that they will be equipped with future technology clusters, which will be rolled out successively across the entire portfolio with the launch of the Neue Klasse,” Zipse added.
“We are taking a huge leap forward with our new technology clusters – achieving maximum scalability, increasing the level of innovation and enhancing customer benefits. We do not differentiate between segments or drivetrain technologies – we provide every customer with the latest technology.”
