KGM Motors UK has launched its next-generation Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain, marking the debut of the technology in the Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid as the brand continues to expand its electrified line-up for UK customers.

Formerly known as SsangYong, KGM Motors UK said the series-parallel hybrid system has been developed to deliver a driving experience that is as close as possible to a full electric vehicle, while retaining the durability, range and towing characteristics expected of a KGM SUV.

The Dual Tech Hybrid System has been developed in collaboration with BYD and combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with an e-DHT hybrid transmission and in-series dual motors.

The petrol engine uses Miller-cycle operation and a variable geometry turbocharger, with fuel injection pressure increased from 250 bar to 350 bar to improve combustion efficiency, boost output and reduce emissions.

Advanced cylinder-block coatings have also been applied to enhance durability under the frequent start-stop cycles associated with hybrid operation.

In this configuration, the engine produces 149.6PS and 220Nm of torque and is designed to operate primarily as a high-efficiency generator rather than always driving the wheels directly.

The system is built around Korea’s first P1 + P3 dual-motor architecture, adapted by KGM from BYD plug-in hybrid technology for full hybrid use.

A 130kW P3 drive motor mounted close to the drive shaft delivers up to 177ps and 300Nm of torque, providing instant throttle response, strong acceleration and confident overtaking.

The electrified Dual Hybrid Transmission supports electric-only driving, series hybrid operation and parallel hybrid or engine drive modes, automatically selecting between nine operating modes depending on speed, load and driving conditions.

All-electric driving is possible at speeds of up to 62mph, while an adjustable regenerative braking system with three selectable levels allows drivers to tailor deceleration and energy recovery, supported by Smart Regenerative Braking that adapts to traffic conditions.

Kevin Griffin, managing director at KGM Motors UK, said: “The new Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain in Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid shows exactly where KGM is heading in the UK.

“It gives our customers the smooth, near-silent feel they associate with electric vehicles, but with the range, robustness and everyday usability they expect from a KGM.

“This technology is the foundation for our next generation of powertrains, as we bring more practical, real-world electrified options to the market.”

Both the Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid feature extensive sound insulation and smart frequency dampers to improve ride comfort and reduce noise, with the Actyon Hybrid adding features including a 360-degree camera, premium suede interior, noise-cancelling tyres, a hexagon steering wheel and a kick-operation power tailgate.
