Kia Rio EcoDynamics – still the most economical non-hybrid you can buy
Kia Rio EcoDynamics 5 Door 1.1 CRDi 1 74hp ISG
Car review: SAM HARDY
What is it?
The Kia Rio EcoDynamics remains the most economical non-hybrid car you can buy. Amazing 69bhp 1.1-litre three cylinder diesel-engined Ford Fiesta rival gets the usual array of eco tweaks – start/stop, longer gearing, better aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres – and returns 88mpg while emitting just 85g/km of CO2. It’s priced at £11,895 (but add £800 if you want the aircon option).
What’s hot?
- Those fuel economy figures. Yes, it’s always hard to get close to manufacturer claims but we reckon you’ll see 70mpg without really trying
- Despite having only 69bhp and longer gearing the little Kia feels peppy around town…
- …and it’s fine on the motorway too
- The three-cylinder diesel has a characterful note, which settles to a hum at high speed
- The steering is precise and the ride comfy. It’s a good car to drive
- iPod connectivity comes as standard. Cabin quality is solid
- Seven year warranty
What’s not?
- To get those sensational figures you have to go without aircon…
- …but adding the £800 option only reduces economy to 74.9mpg
- And it’s still road tax-free with 94g/km
- There’s a rattle from the engine under power
- A Fiesta is more fun to drive
Business Car Manager Road Test Verdict
The Rio is a great little supermini with any engine, but this frugal three cylinder diesel is the best in the range. It requires few compromises and returns some amazing figures.

What’s more, it’s enjoyable to drive. On a company car comparison it’s cheaper than a Fiesta 1.4 TDCi and the Rio beats its fuel economy by almost 20mpg. Your business mileage will be an awful lot cheaper with this car.
No wonder we voted the Kia Rio 1.0 EcoDynamics our Business Car Manager Best Sub-100g/km Business Car.
