Peugeot has updated the plug-in hybrid powertrain in its 308, 308 SW, and 408 models, the new unit extending the electric-only range of the cars up to around 48 miles.

Launched with the new 3008 and 5008, the more efficient unit combines a new version of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 125hp (92kW) electric motor, mated to a new seven-speed dual shift clutch automatic transmission.

A larger 17.2kWh battery is fitted while a 3.7kW onboard charger is standard on all models, enabling a 0-100% charge in four hours and 20 minutes, reducing to just over two hours with the optional 7.4kW onboard charger.

In the 308 and 308SW the new drivetrain produces a combined 195hp with torque of 360Nm, and in the 408 225hp and 360Nm. WLTP CO2 emissions figures are rated at a minimum of 18g/km, up to 13g/km less than the outgoing version.

Peugeot believes the updates will appeal to fleet users of the cars as the increased range drops their benefit-in-kind tax rates by 4% to 9% on the 2025/2026 rates. This translates to a monthly saving between £28 and £60 for the 408, and £24 and £55 for the 308 and 308 SW.

The new powertrain offers Hybrid, Electric, and Sport drive modes. The default mode is Hybrid, which prioritises all-electric driving as often as possible. The Electric mode allows EV-only speeds of up to 83mph while the battery charge lasts, and in Sport the electric power supplements the petrol engine to deliver maximum performance.

Prices for the 308 plug-in start at £38,1110, while the SW estate format version coasts an extra £1200. The 408 starts at £41,500. Orders open in March, with first deliveries in the Spring.
