  • New ultra tax efficient BMW 530e iPerformance PHEV model launches March with 46g/km CO2

IF you fancy a new BMW 5 Series – and frankly, who wouldn’t? –  then you need to check out these two new editions to the BMW 5 Series range: the BMW 520d SE EfficientDynamics Auto; and the BMW 530e SE auto with its plug-in electric hybrid drivetrain.

Both these new low tax BMWs, out this month, can save you on the company car tax you hand over each month to the taxman.

Of course, it’s not as if the current BMW 520d is exactly poor on CO2 emissions – 108g/km with a tax band of 23% in 2017/18 to be exact – but the new 520d EfficientDynamics shaves these figures: 102g/km and a 22% company car tax  band in 2017/18.

There is a price to pay though for these lower emissions: the 520d SE EfficientDynamics costs £37,165 while the 520d SE Auto is £35,790 – so the higher P11D has an impact on overall benefit in kind, but still in the EfficientDynamic’s behaviour.

However, if you really want to beat the taxman, then have a look at the the Plug-In Hybrid Electric version of the 5 Series, called the 530e.

The BMW 530e iPerformance has CO2 emissions of just 46g/km, giving it a company car tax banding of 9%. Yup, just 9% for all that BMW executive luxury!

The 530e is powered by a 252hp TwinPower Turbo petrol four cylinder engine but also has a 95hp electric motor  with a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

This means the car can be run in electric-only mode for about 29 miles.

BMW says the car can be charged from a household power socket with the charging cable included as standard or on the go from public charging stations with an optional cable available from BMW Accessories. The navigation system and BMW Remote App give information about the location and availability of suitable stations.

The BMW 520d SE EfficientDynamics Auto is priced from £37,220 on the road when it goes on sale this March; the 530e will cost £43,985.

BMW 530e: company car tax bands are 9% (2017/18); 13% (18/19); 16% (19/20)
