Low-tax petrol engine for Ford Mondeo

COMPANY CAR drivers can now opt for a petrol engine Ford Mondeo and enjoy company car tax parity with a diesel.

That’s because the new Ford Mondeo range, which features an updated grille, reprofiled bonnet line and more sophisticated interior, also has a new engine in its armoury: a 160PS 1.6-litre direct injection turbo petrol EcoBoost engine.

Diesel-engined cars are increasingly favoured by company car drivers because of the low CO2 emissions and usually lower benefit in kind company car tax.

However, benefit in kind (BIK) is based on a combination of CO2 emissions and P11D value – so a petrol engine with reasonable emissions and a competitive price position can provide similar levels of company car tax. And that’s exactly what Ford has done with this new Mondeo model.

Businesses benefit, too, thanks to reduced class 1A National Insurance contributions.

Here’s how the cars compare on BIK.

Company car tax challenge – Ford Mondeo EcoBoost v Ford Mondeo TDCi

  • MONDEO 1.6 EcoBoost Zetec
  • P11D value £18,735
  • Economy/CO2 41.5mpg/158gkm
  • Company car tax band 20%
  • BIK value £3,747
  • Company car tax 20%/40% £749/£1,500

  • MONDEO 2.0 TDCi Zetec
  • P11D value £19,730
  • Economy/CO2 53.3mpg/139g/km
  • Company car tax band 19%
  • P11D value £3,749
  • Company car tax 20%/40% £750/£1,500

“The new 1.6 EcoBoost Mondeo has the same BIK value as our 2.0-litre 140PS diesel,” commented Jon Gunn-Smith, Ford brand manager of large cars.

“In other words there is no company car tax penalty for choosing a petrol Mondeo,” Mr Gunn-Smith added.

Mr Gunn-Smith said that further low carbon Mondeo models were on their way. A 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine with stop-start technology will lower the CO2 emissions further, while early 2011 will also see a 115PS 1.6 diesel with CO2 emissions of 114g/km and fuel economy of 65.6mpg.
