Merthyr Tydfil Council installs Fleetclear tech to stop speeding
The council's entire fleet has been fitted with a GPS-based tracking system, increasing awareness of speed limit changes.
Merthyr Tydfil Council has deployed a telematics solution from Fleetclear to ensure council vehicles are not breaking the 20mph speed limits.
Telematics data showed that speeding alerts on the council’s fleet increased from 80 per month to more than 11,000 per month, once the 20mph limits were introduced in September 2023.
The council’s fleet has since been fitted with a GPS-based tracking system, increasing awareness of speed limit changes.
Geofences monitor the locations of the 20mph zones, with an aural warning sound alerting drivers when they have entered a zone.
Ioan Vantu, transport manager at Merthyr Tydfil Council said: “Since having the system fitted, we have monitored the occurrence of speed alert counts at random intervals across the fleet and have found a reduction of 53.54% in speeding events within the geofence zones.”
The system was fitted to all types of vehicles, from recycling lorries to quad bikes.
Data collected by the telematics system can be monitored though Fleetclear Connect, an online fleet management portal, allowing for real-time monitoring and location tracking.
