MINI has completed a year-long renewal of its existing model range with the unveiling of the latest fourth-generation version of the MINI Cooper Convertible.

Unlike its Cooper sister and the Countryman the new Convertible is not currently being offered in electric form, but it will again be a British-built car, production returning to Cowley in Oxford after nine years at VDL Redcar in The Netherlands.

The two versions will both use turbocharged petrol engines; the Cooper Convertible C employs a 1.5-litre unit of 163hp giving it a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds while the 2-litre unit of the Cooper Convertible C offers up 204hp, cutting the 0-62mph time to 6.9 seconds.

Both cars are slightly slower than their hard-top siblings, due to the extra weight of the electrically folding fabric roof. It can be operated at speeds of up to 19mph, opening in 18 seconds and closing in 15, while it can also be set to partially open, acting like a sunroof.

With the roof folded the Convertible offers just 160 litres of boot space, though with the roof raised this increases to 215 litres, slightly more than its hard-top sister.

In terms of styling and equipment, outside and in, the Convertible models will mimic the already on sale Cooper petrol model. Three trim levels will be on offer, dubbed Classic, Exclusive and Sport. The main changes between the first two include larger alloy wheels and uprated interior upholstery, while the Sport adds a John Cooper style body kit and gearshift paddles to the steering wheel.

Business users choosing the car will need to consider the BIK implications – the 147-150g/km CO2 figure of both models, combined with fuel economy of around 43mpg, will attract BIK tax of 34-35% in 2024-25. Cooper C recommended retail prices will start at £26,200 and the S at £30,200.
