Nissan has begun deliveries the all-new version of its Interstar large van on sale, describing it as a highly practical machine with class-leading aerodynamics and an enhanced load-carrying capacity.
The new LCV will be available with diesel and electric powertrains, the latter offering a WLTP driving range of up to 285 miles. Nissan describes it as the manufacturer’s first-ever fully-electric large van and a major milestone on the brand’s transition to electric.
The Interstar-e electric model comes ins standards from with a 40kWh battery, plus a long-range 87kWh option for wider applications. It has a maximum DC charging speed of 130kW for the 87kWh battery, which Nissan says will deliver up to 157 miles of range in 30 minutes.
Also available are a standard 22kW AC charger for the 87kWh battery, or 11kW AC version for 40kWh battery, the Interstar-e being designed for depot use and charging from 10% to 100% in less than four hours.
An evolution from its predecessor model, the new Interstar is larger and safer than the outgoing model. Depending on wheelbase chosen the load area now measures up to 3855mm with side-door access through a 1312mm cavity, which Nissan claims as class-leading.
Cargo capacity ranges from 10.8 cubic metres in the L2H2 version to a maximum of 14.8 cubic metres in the L3H3 model. It also offers a maximum towing capacity of 2500kg to enable the transporting of greater loads.
Payload capacities are 4T up to 1.9 tonnes for the ICE version of the van and 4T up to 1.6 tonnes for the EV variant. The chassis ICE version has a limit of 4T up to 2.1 tonnes, with its EV companion managing 4T up to 1.9 tonnes.
Nissan is highlighting the improved aerodynamics of the Interstar, claiming its 20% drag (SCx) reduction improvement as another class-leading feature saving fuel or electricity and improving range.
A range of factory-built conversions are available to Interstar customers, including a tipper, dropside and Box.
The safety specification has been upgraded with the addition of several electronic aids not previously seen on an Interstar and including Forward Emergency Braking, Electronic Stability Programme, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition.
A notable addition is 1-box braking – an electronically managed hydraulic system that saves weight, improves braking power, and provides users with consistent braking no matter what payload the van is carrying. EV versions also include brake energy regeneration replenishing battery capacity. The Interstar recently earned a Platinum rating from safety body Euro NCAP.
