SAAB’S all-new executive 9-5 saloon is targeting the Audi A6 with prices starting at around £24,000.
Although prices have yet to be formalised for the 9-5, Saab believes the A6 is a legitimate target for its all-new executive car, which goes on sale next year. The Audi A6 2.0 2.0TDIe starts at £24,900.
The Swedish built saloon will be available in three levels of trim: Linear, Vector Sport and topline Aero. A sports chassis is also available, with suspension lowered by 10mm.
Among the high-tech features on offer on the Saab 9-5 are: aircraft-style head-up information display (HUD) which includes sat-nav route guidance; adaptive headlights (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam) that can also react to oncoming vehicles so as not to dazzle; adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; dynamic parking assistance with front, rear and side sensors – it won’t park the car for you but lets you know if the space is big enough – and Saab XWD all-wheel-drive system.
There will be three choices of petrol engine, all turbocharged:
1.6T 180hp, 230Nm
2.0T 220hp, 350Nm
2.8T V6 300hp, 400Nm
And two choices of turbocharged diesels:
2.0 TDi 160hp, 350Nm
2.0 TDi twin-scroll turbo 190hp, 400Nm
CO2 emissions for the 160hp diesel are said to be 139g/km, placing the Saab in the 19% company car tax band for 2009/10.
Managing director Jonathan Nash reckons the new Saab will appeal to independent free thinkers. “All the demographics suggest the 9-5 will appeal to highly creative individuals, and Saab’s traditional heartland of doctors, dentists and architects,” said Nash.
Over the next couple of years, the new Saab 9-5 heralds the start of a stream of new Saab product:
