Volvo has unveiled its ES90, a new electric fastback design with a potential range of significantly more than 400 miles.

Orders are now open for the car, the Swedish brand’s first electric design that is not an SUV, with the first vehicles expected on the road early in 2026 at prices starting from around £70,000.

Prime rivals are expected to include the BMW i5, the electric equivalent to the dominant business car the BMW 5 Series.

The ES90 is built on the same new electric platform as its sister vehicle the EX90 SUV. Three variants will be available, the entry level being a single-motor rear-wheel-drive car with 333hp and powered by a 88kWh battery, plus two twin-motor models using a 102kWh battery and with 450 and 680hp respectively.

Volvo adds that the ES90 is its first car with 800V technology, resulting in combined cycle ranges of 404 miles with the smaller battery and 434 miles with the larger one. Both will be able to be rapid charged at 350kW, the larger battery being replenished from 10 to 80% in 20 minutes.

The ES90’s creators describe the car as combining the refined elegance of a saloon, the adaptability of a fastback, and the spacious interior and higher ground clearance associated with SUVs. Its 3.1-metre wheelbase frees up extensive interior space plus a boot of 424 litres, and a ‘frunk’ under the bonnet offering an extra 22 litres.

Volvo expects the ES90 to assume the role of range technological flagship alongside the EX90 – according to its makers the new car is the most powerful in terms of computing capacity that the brand has so far produced.

It includes a new single ‘Superset’ of electronic hardware and software architecture that will be rolled out across all future Volvo electric releases. This allows over-the-air software updates keeping cars up to date at all times.

Other notables include a further upgraded safety specification including a lidar sensor, five radar versions, seven cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors. Volvo’s driver-understanding system is fitted as standard – this can detect when the driver’s attention is no longer focused on the road and step in to offer support.
