To celebrate Clean Energy Day, Nissan has revealed a solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) concept, developed by its Advanced Product Planning team in Dubai, along with the Powertrain Planning team in Barcelona.
Nissan fitted an Ariya with solar panels on the bonnet, roof and tailgate, allowing for up to 14.3 miles of additional range per day, in ideal conditions.
If driven in London, the solar-powered Ariya EV would be able to add 6.3 miles of range each day.
Nissan reported that during a two hour, 50 mile journey, the car could produce up to 0.5kWh of energy, extending its range by 1.8 miles.
Shunsuke Shigemoto, vice president of ePowertrain & internal combustion engine powertrain technology research & advanced engineering and chief powertrain engineer at Nissan AMIEO, said: “The solar‑powered Ariya concept embodies Nissan’s belief that innovation and sustainability must move forward hand‑in‑hand.
“By exploring how vehicles can generate their own renewable energy, we are opening the door to new opportunities for customers- greater freedom, reduced charging dependency, and a cleaner future.
“This concept is not just a technical milestone; it’s a vision of how Nissan intends to lead the next phase of electric mobility.”
