OLYMPIC gold medal winning rower Alex Gregory will be pushing his range in a different way in future – at the wheel of a Vauxhall Ampera.

Alex, one of the GB coxless four team who powered to victory at London 2012, has taken delivery of Vauxhall’s much-praised range-extender electric family car.

He likes the environmental credentials of the car, that is also making waves across the business car market thanks to its very low company car tax rates of five per cent.

On an Ampera 1.4 16v VVT V6 Electron ECOTEC E-REV Auto this translates to just £354 a year for a 20 per cent tax payer, or £709 for a 40 per cent tax payer.

The Ampera’s electric motor gives it a real-world battery range of between 25-50 miles and it can be charged using an ordinary 240V three-point plug. But the headline-making extra is the car’s small range-extending generator, powered by a 1.4-litre petrol engine, which provides up to an additional 300-plus miles of driving – at all times electrically propelled as the petrol engine only ever generates power for the motor.

Alex says he is really excited to be driving the Ampera. “I was very interested in working with Vauxhall and the Ampera because of its environmental link to myself and rowing on the open rivers,” he adds.

Vauxhall MD Duncan Aldred believes Alex and the Ampera are well suited; “It is great to work with somebody who has achieved so much to such a high level,” he says.

“The Vauxhall Ampera is a car which pushes boundaries and goes further. These are certainly attributes we feel Alex demonstrates daily, challenging his limits and showing sheer determination.”

Ampera prices start at £28,750 on-the-road (including a £5000 government grant) for the Positiv model, while the range-topping version driven by Alex includes such desirable extras as voice-activated sat nav featuring street level mapping for 20 European countries, audio/video DVD player, hard drive device with 30GB music file capacity and a Bose ‘Energy Efficient Series’ sound system.
