Orders open for updated Volkswagen Crafter

Volkswagen is taking orders for the updated version of its Crafter, the revamp focusing on more technology and an improved interior.

Volkswagen is now taking orders for the updated version of its largest van, the Crafter, the revamp focusing on more technology and an improved interior.

The latest version gains a suite of new driver-assistance systems as standard, including Autonomous Emergency Braking with cyclist and pedestrian monitoring), a lane-keeping system, Dynamic Road Sign Display, a speed limiter and acoustic Park Distance Control for the rear area. Travel Assist will be available as an option for the Crafter for the first time, as will Emergency Assist.

A new dash design is centred on a ‘digital cockpit’ instrument cluster, with a revised steering wheel and relocated controls for easier use. The new 10.4-inch central infotainment screen provides mobile online services and connected apps, while wireless smartphone charging and USB-C sockets.

Upgrading to Volkswagen’s optional Discover Media satellite navigation system also increases the colour touchscreen to 12.9 inches, with a proximity sensor.

The wide range of Crafter body styles and powertrain options remain. Both medium and long-wheelbase variants can be supplied with high roof, while the upper of the two trim levels, Commerce Plus is available with a long wheelbase and Maxi high roof. Low-roof and super high-roof options are available to order.

The three-tonne GVW CR30 versions come in front-wheel drive form with a 140hp 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine and six-speed manual gearbox. The 3.5-tonne CR35 can be specified with a 177hp 2.0-litre TDI with either front-wheel drive or VW’s 4Motion four-wheel drive, or a 163hp variant with rear-wheel drive.

The5-tonne CR50 is fitted exclusively with the 163hp rear-drive powertrain and both it and the CR35 can be supplied optionally with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Priced from £45,660 on the road including VAT, the new Crafter is expected with its first customers in mid August.
