SINCE my mileage is always over 2000 a month, I’ve always assumed that it’s more cost effective for me to drive a diesel as my business car.
Two things have made me wonder if this was quite right.
First, I happen to have had petrol and diesel versions of the SEAT Leon as my business car, one after the other, so what better opportunity to do a proper comparison? Both cars have done exactly the same sort of mileage – country A roads, country lanes, lots of motorway, and the odd foray into city centres.
The second reason is nothing at all to do with which car makes more economic sense, and everything to do with the (unexpected) fun factor that comes with the Leon 1.4 TSI.
I reasoned that if I could fiddle the sums well then there I’d be, fully justified in switching to petrol on sound economic grounds and the fun factor merely thrown in as a bonus. Fun factor added; sensible side appeased; perfect.
That’s not to say that the SEAT Leon 1.6 TDI is boring to drive – far from it (click here for more on the diesel). But this TSI coupe thing is the business. Pin sharp handling, sports car scaring acceleration, and all in such a squat, unpretentious, business-like, competent looking thing. I love it.
