Peugeot has revived its high-performance GTi brand with the electric E-208 GTi, which produces 280PS.
The GTi brand launched with the now-iconic 205 GTi in 1984, and had been dormant since the 308 GTi went off sale in 2021.
Launched at the 24h of Le Mans circuit, the electric hot hatch will accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, with front wheel drive.
The front-mounted motor has a limited-slip differential integrated into its gear reducer, improving cornering abilities.
The E-208 GTi has a 54kWh battery, with a range of 217 miles.
Fast charging enables the car to charge from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes, while a new 80% charge limiter allows the battery’s health to be prolonged.
The model features 18-inch wheels, with the design referencing the famous Speedline wheels fitted to the 205 GTi 1.9, and the fabric on the sports seats also calling back to Peugeot’s original hot hatch.
A wider track (56mm at the front, 27mm at the rear), along with ultra high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres provide increased grip, while four-piston front brakes give increased stopping power.
GTi models also feature recalibrated stability control, 30mm lower ride height, and a series of suspension tweaks.
Like the 205 GTi, the E-208 features red floor mats and seatbelts, while the instrument cluster and ambient lighting have a red theme by default.
Jean Marc Finot, senior vice president of Stellantis Motorsport, said: “The new Peugeot E-208 GTi embodies our commitment to performance and innovation, drawing from our extensive race pedigree, including a heritage of rally accomplishments and now competing in the World Endurance Championship.
“Having been involved in the creation of the original 205 GTi 40 years ago, this new era of innovation with the E-208 GTi is especially meaningful to me and I am happy to find again the typical PEUGEOT GTi agility and steering feeling.
“I am proud to present a car that combines racing excellence with modern driving pleasure.”
