Peugeot is hoping to repeat the success of the 208 with the new 2008 crossover

COMPANY car buyers will have a new choice in the small crossover market later this year – the Peugeot 2008.

The new car is related to the recently-introduced 208 with which it shares its engines and will turn up in the UK in late summer. Order books open in June.

At just over four metres, the Peugeot 2008 will be quite compact. There are few detailed figures so far but Peugeot is promising that CO2 figures will start at a business-friendly 99g/km and that there’ll be “a true breakthrough in terms of fuel economy”.

Engines will include Peugeot’s e-HDI diesels and the new three-cylinder petrol units that have been well received in the 208.

There’s no mention of a four-wheel drive option but the 2008 will be available with Grip Control, an enhanced form of traction control already seen on the 3008. That should give the new car an edge over other front-wheel drives in muddy or snowy conditions.

The 2008 also plays up its rugged side with its big wheel arches and raised driving position, as well as front and rear body protection and side mouldings in stainless steel.

As well as aiming at company car drivers with families, Peugeot is hoping that the 2008 will have genuine global appeal and it will be produced in France, China and Brazil.
