PORSCHE has just demonstrated that charging an electric vehicle can be as quick as filling up with fuel.

A 90kW Porsche electric vehicle was charged in under three minutes. The charge provided enough electricity for a 62 mile range.

The charger, which is free to use, is located near the A8 motorway between Ulm and Augsburg in Germany.

Porsche says the new charging station is suitable for all EVs using the European standard Type 2 charger.

The charging station is a development of the “FastCharge” research project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure with a consortium that includes BMW and Siemens.

Porsche says that the charging capacity of the new FastChargers is three to nine times as high as what is currently possible with DC rapid-charging stations.

The two Jettinger charging stations are currently available for use with all CCS-enabled vehicles, free of charge. Depending on the model of vehicle, the new ultra-fast charging station can be used for vehicles with 400-volt and those with 800-volt battery systems. In each case the charging capacity provided automatically adjusts to the vehicle’s maximum permitted charging capacity.
