Porsche show-stopper highlights hybrid technology

HYBRIDS were a big part of this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Sports car maker Porsche displayed this stunning 918 Spyder concept model with 94mpg economy potential and emissions of just 70g/km.

Yet the Porsche 918 Spyder can accelerate to 62mph (100km/h) in under 3.2 seconds before going on to a top speed in excess of 198mph.

The Porsche 918 does this with plug-in hybrid power with electric motors on both the front and rear axles, as well as a 500bhp V8 petrol engine.

But the Porsche 918 Spyder was not the only Porsche with hyrid power: there was the new Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive, and the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car with electric drive on the front axle.

However, Porsche was not alone. Ferrari demonstrated the 599 HY-KERS hybrid sports car, utilising F1 technology to bring fuel and emission saving technology to its cars.

Both Porsche and Ferrari with hybrid sports car- who would have thought it? But it demonstrates the exciting strides technology is taking – and the exciting new cars at the Geneva Motor Show.
