Preconditioning key to improving EV range in hot weather, says Vertu

Battery preconditioning is key to improving electric vehicle (EV) range and charging performance in hot weather, according to Vertu.
Vertu recommended entering charging stops into built-in navigation systems, which allows the car to automatically precondition its battery ahead of arrival.
On vehicles with manual preconditioning, Vertu recommended activating the function 20 to 30 minutes before arriving at a charger.
The company also recommended preconditioning EV batteries before setting off on a journey during hot weather, to improve range.
Thomas McLoughlin, sales executive at Vertu OMODA&JAECOO Burton, said: “As temperatures rise and more people head off on summer road trips, it’s worth remembering that hot weather can affect how efficiently your electric vehicle charges and performs.
“While modern EVs feature sophisticated battery management systems that help protect the battery from extreme temperatures, they may temporarily reduce charging speeds or limit performance to prevent overheating.
“If you’re planning a longer journey, try to precondition your battery before setting off or before arriving at a rapid charger, if your vehicle offers this feature.
“In fact, many newer EVs will automatically begin warming or cooling the battery to its optimum charging temperature when you enter a fast charger into the built-in sat nav.
